I have been absolutely stunned looking at all of the complete and utter devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana and Mississippi. It is truly mind boggling to me the destruction - not to mention the stories of survivors, those still trying to be survivors, and the stories of those who did not make it.
People are displaced from their homes and they may be displaced forever. They have not only lost their homes, but also their jobs, friends, neighbors, schools, family members, everything they have spent their lives to create. My heart breaks for these people.
Can you imagine this being your neighborhood?
What if you went home and this was where your house used to be?
At least there are survivors who are trying to help their neighbors.
However, there are still hundreds, if not thousands of people still waiting to be rescued.
People that are still left in New Orleans have been ordered out. This is probably a very good idea, but how do you leave when all roads lead to this?
It is truly unimaginable. I can't even comprehend it.
I have also been concerned about other lost beings. What about all of the lost pets? Some people had to leave their pets at home when they evacuated. Some of them had to leave fast due to fast rising water. Some people have managed to keep their pets with them - I have seen them being rescued along with their guardians. But I have also seen pictures of lost pets. It saddens my heart. But I am also thrilled to see that some people who, even though they have lost everything and have nowhere to go, have reached out to help some of those lost pets.
God Bless this man.
These people need our help. Thousands upon thousands of people have nothing. They need help. If you can do anything at all to help them - please donate money to the Red Cross. They can use your money to buy the things that are needed in bulk - so even a little money will go a long way. Their website is Red Cross.
Don't forget the pets either. The SPCA has already headed to New Orleans to rescue animals in need. They need money to do this so if you can spare a little for them also, please do. Their website is SPCA.

My heart is breaking more and more with each new photo that is being shown. I can't even begin to imagine the devestation and distress these poor souls are enduring..
I am so thankful to have a home and healthy family - along with all of the small things I take for granted each and every day.

I'm stunned but I am also angry. How can we, the supposedly greatest country in the world not be able to help these people in a more timely manner? I do not get it. Take all of the stupid traffic helicopters from all over the US and send them down there to air drop some food & water. People need food & water now. What is going on?
On the subject of pets. If I was in that situation, I would probably die because I could not, would not leave without my fur babies.
Tragic !

We are seeing pictures over here all the time as well and it is hard to believe that this disaster is happening in a first world country - it looks more like a 3rd world country with the lack of immediate response.
I feel so sorry for all those people affected.

Karen, it is beyond tragic. I'm also angry - where is our government? Where is the national guard? How is it that we can help every other country out there in need, but seem to be ignoring our own? Tragic beyond belief. Shocking, disheartening, and incredibly sad.

It's just heartbreaking. I watch it on tv and am just horrified by each new thing that comes on. We have a friend who works down in Houston and is helping to move people into the Astrodome and the situation there is just awful. He sends email reports that don't even sound real they are so incomprehensibly sad.
